Pirates of the Caribbean,  On Stranger Tides,  and  At World's End were all based on stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. In the book, The Silver Shadow, by Walter Farley, our hero, whose name is Jack Sparrow is a member of a pirate crew aboard a ship called the Black Pearl. The captain of the ship is a man named Billy Bones who resembles Captain Hook in tone and appearance only.

Captain Jack Sparrow was not totally original however. In fact he took his name from two characters from other stories: Robert Louis Stevenson's Captain William 'Bart' Roberts in Treasure Island and Horatio Hornblower's Lieutenant William 'Billy' Trelawney in the Horatio Hornblower series of novels by C S Forester.

Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean Cinematic Universe has been a fairly interesting character. Portrayed by Johnny Depp, he is seen as a drunken, indolent pirate captain who favors fighting with his fists over weapons. He is somewhat rich and is the leader of a group of pirates on a ship called "The Black Pearl". The film was based on the original novel "The Curse Of The Black Pearl" by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that they keep having writers come in to help develop Jack's character. They are either re-writing the film or the script is being divided into different versions. I think that is really screwed up. Out of 6 Pirates of the Caribbean films I've watched four have been made by one director, Gore Verbinski. And it's not really his fault, but he has had to deal with 2 directors. So I don't understand why this keeps happening. The most current movie in development is "The Journal of Henry Morgan" which was announced shortly after the last film received its 15 year release date. There was also a trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" which was released in August 2012, but that wasn't made by Verbinski, just by others who are working on it with him.
